About

Why, hello!

My name is Anke.

If you are not sure how to say that, it rhymes with the German word for thank you – ‘Danke’.

I illustrate stories, poems and events, using sand and an ‘old-school’ overhead projector.  It escaped being dumped into landfill along with tens of thousands more across the country.

I am currently based in Melbourne, Australia and have worked throughout Australia as a performer, facilitator and artist, extensively with the award-winning multi-arts company  Crossroad Arts, in Mackay, Queensland.  My sand work has included illustrating spoken word poetry events in Melbourne, a 24-hour Speak Out event in Federation Square, running story-telling activities in aged care and participatory events during a residency at a Café on Sydney Rd, in Brunswick, Victoria.

The portfolio section on this site documents a selection of the ephemeral images created throughout this time, with a mix of images created live and in-studio, as well as sketches, experiments and video.  It’s a good place to start if you want to see some of the work I do.

The blog documents some of my latest experiments and discussion of the process and will provide links to various inspiration, sources and other artists.  If you’d like to know more, or have any questions, I’m always happy to chat in the comments section.

So, welcome!

Slip off your shoes and take a wander.  Get some grit between your toes.

There’s always room for one more around the fire.

Anke
